Story

The background extends from the end of Japan’s Taisho Period (1912-25) to the early Showa Period (1926-89) of Japanese history.
At that time, hearing impaired education consisted primarily of the lipreading method, with little if any attention devoted to sign language.
Raising questions about this approach was Kiyoshi Takahashi, headmaster of Osaka City School of the Deaf and Dumb. The movie is based on a true story.
It depicts efforts to resist the powers of authority to achieve genuine hearing impaired education based on sign language. The ultimate objective was to build a society where diversified cultures can coexist.
The roles of deaf persons, who have risen to comprise their own global standard, are played by actors who are in fact hard of hearing. Every effort was made to accurately reproduce the sign language used about 100 years ago, including instruction in signing by actual deaf persons. The result is the portrayal of sign language that has also earned the gratitude and acceptance of those with hearing issues.
The film features Tomoya Onaka, who is a child of deaf adults (CODA). Onaka himself is also active in education for children with hearing loss, with his dynamic screen performance truly exceeding the realm of mere acting. A fine supporting role is delivered by Hideaki Nasu, well-known for his contributions to the sign-language news on Japan’s publicly owned broadcaster NHK. Other actors include Asahi Kurizuka (famed for his roles in historical dramas), Junichi Komoto (of the Jicho Kacho comedy duo) who excels in the sign language division of Japanese entertainment conglomerate Yoshimoto Kogyo, and other highly capable performers.
The contents reach beyond the realm of mere “native sign language,” furnishing an opportunity to learn the history of signing and other methods of education for the deaf in Japan.
