Story
Paintings of the Battle of Okinawa, drawn by the artists Toshi and Iri Maruki, are internationally recognized masterpieces conveying the evils and stupidity of war to future generations.
In the words of Iri: “There can be no greater testament to the horrors of war than depicting the Battle of Okinawa. Images of that conflict must be preserved in paintings.” Added Toshi: “These canvases are works created hand in hand with the people of Okinawa.”
Nearing their twilight years, the couple personally visited and explored the scenes of the bloody Battle of Okinawa, meeting with the local people. Drawing from the Ryukyu culture and art as a key source of creative energy, they devoted their hearts and souls to the creation of a total of 14 separate panels.
This art documentary is the first ever attempt to showcase all 14 paintings. Tracing the origins of the thoughts and emotions of this artist team, the story sheds light on their motivations in undertaking such a massive project late in life.
Today, as the war in Ukraine rages on, this film stands as a statement of how art can function as an ark to transport prayers for peace.
